Andre Onana benched again and will return to United after Cameroon exit AFCON in last-16

Andre Onana will return to Manchester United in the coming days after his native Cameroon were knocked out of the Africa Cup of Nations.

For the second consecutive match, the goalkeeper was omitted from the starting 11 as Rigobert Song favoured Onana’s cousin, Fabrice Ondoa.

The Indomitable Lions took on one of the competition’s major favourites Nigeria in a last-16 clash in the Ivory Coast but ultimately fell to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of an Ademola Lookman double.

United’s No.24 did not make a single save in the one match he featured, having delayed his arrival to ensure he was available to face Wigan Athletic and Tottenham Hotspur. Onana took between the sticks in the 3-1 loss to Senegal – Cameroon’s penultimate group-stage fixture – and was subsequently dropped by the coach.

Bayindir will make maiden outing on Sunday

Even if he was somehow able to make it to Wales in time for the Reds’ FA Cup tie with Newport County this afternoon, Erik ten Hag has already decided that Altay Bayindir will be granted his club debut four months on from his arrival last summer. Kick-off is at 4.30pm.
