Andre Onana departs for AFCON less than 24 hours after playing vs Tottenham

Manchester United’s Andre Onana is on his way to the Ivory Coast ahead of Cameroon’s Africa Cup of Nations opener against Guinea at 5pm this evening.

The goalkeeper is likely to take to the bench for the first group-stage match after he played the full 90 minutes in Sunday’s 2-2 draw to Tottenham Hotspur, which concluded at almost 6.30pm.

Onana made it clear to his nation that he wished to stay with United for as long as possible, opting to delay his meet-up with the squad and consequently miss their warm-up match versus Zambia last week in favour of playing Monday’s FA Cup win over Wigan Athletic.

United granted winter break

Wary that he could well lose his place to second-choice Altay Bayindir, Onana also ensured he was available for yesterday’s Premier League clash at Old Trafford. Now, United have a brief window of rest until the last week of January, when they face either Eastleigh or Newport County in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
