‘Bayindir can’t be any worse’ – Mark Lawrenson claims Manchester United won’t miss Andre Onana

Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson does not believe Manchester United will miss Andre Onana when the Cameroon goalkeeper departs for the African Cup of Nations.

Lawrenson didn’t give a glaring reference of Bayindir, not that he’s expected to have any idea how good he is, but he says he can’t be ‘any worse’ than Onana.

It would be fair to say Onana has had a rocky start to life at Old Trafford, but we’ve seen glimpses of what he can bring to the team – especially against Arsenal earlier this season.

“Altay Bayindir can’t be any worse than Andre Onana!” Lawrenson told Paddy Power, as per DAZN.

“The number of mistakes that Onana has made, Manchester United won’t be any worse off if he heads of AFCON. Sometimes you have to throw someone in – this is his chance. Hopefully, he’ll get some protection, which Onana has never had, but he’s been poor anyway.

“He’s a 5/10 for his performances so far, and it can be difficult coming into a new club, but I don’t see how they can do any worse than that – unless they give David de Gea a phone call to come back for a few games. Stranger things have happened!”

Onana joined United from Inter in a £43 million deal last summer, and even though he’s had poor displays in a United shirt, we’ve yet to see Bayindir in action. Our first choice keeper won’t be leaving for AFCON until after Sunday’s game against Tottenham.

All Bayindir can do is wait patiently for his opportunity and he will be aiming to make a good impression to keep Onana out of the team once he returns from AFCON.

  1. I agree, Onana has been a liability since he arrived, mistakes have been plentiful. He has an inability to catch the ball , he invariably palms the ball meaning after a save the ball runs loose in front of goal.
Against West ham for example, the forward gets free in the box and shoots, Onana saves with the flat of his hand , the ball bounces of his hand like a table tennis bat , straight back to the forward who scores.
