A report from Spain claims Manchester United are thinking about recalling Alvaro Fernandez from his loan spell at Granada.
According to Cope, Granada are concerned that United might exercise their return clause and sell the player to Benfica, which would help with Financial Fair Play.
The defender’s contract expires in 2024 so January would be the last chance for United to make profit on the 20-year-old, unless the club is planning to offer Fernandez a new deal.
Fernandez was overlooked by Erik ten Hag at the start of the season amid an injury crisis in defence. United were left with no available left-backs and the manager decided to sign Sergio Reguilon on loan from Tottenham instead of giving Fernandez a run in the first team.
The left-back has been played as a winger at Granada and has impressed Benfica, despite the La Liga side’s worrying campaign.
It didn’t look like Fernandez had a future at United at the beginning of the season, and I would be surprised if anything has changed since then.
