Andre Onana departs for AFCON after Manchester United vs Tottenham

Andre Onana will stay with Manchester United until the Premier League meeting with Tottenham Hotspur on January 14.

The decision was made after an agreement was reached between all parties involved, as per The Athletic.

It means Onana will now be available to play in United’s FA Cup third-round tie against Wigan Athletic on Monday, before Spurs come to Old Trafford six days later.

The Reds will be aiming to progress in the cup as well as beat Tottenham in the league, so it’s a boost to know we’ll have our first choice keeper available for both matches.

Onana will then immediately depart for the African Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast. He is due to represent his country, Cameroon, who face Guinea in their opening match on January 15. Yes, that is just 24 hours after Onana is expected to line-up against Spurs.

United were under the impression that Onana had retired from national team duty and would not be going to AFCON prior to signing him from Inter Milan last summer. The club respected the keeper’s decision to return to the Cameroon team, and now we’ve been rewarded by being allowed to keep him for longer than most expected.

Back-up keeper Altay Bayindir will be hoping to make his United debut while Onana is away this month.

Ten Hag can also pick Tom Heaton as an alternative option between the sticks.
