Birmingham City sack Wayne Rooney as manager after 15 matches

Wayne Rooney has been sacked as Birmingham City manager a disastrous 15-match reign.

Rooney, who was appointed Birmingham City manager at the beginning of October, took over from John Eustace and managed just two wins in 15 matches.

When the appointment was made, the Blues were in the play-off places. Now they’re closer to the Championship relegation zone and Rooney has been sacked, as per the Daily Mail.

A 3-0 defeat to Leeds United on New Year’s Day proved to be the final nail in the coffin for Rooney at St. Andrew’s. Patrick Bamford opened the scoring for Leeds at Elland Road, with Daniel James adding to their lead before the break. Crysencio Summerville wrapped up the scoring in the second half.

England U21 boss and former Republic of Ireland international Lee Carsley is among the names in the frame to replace Rooney at Birmingham City.

Rooney hit out after he was subjected to ‘unacceptable’ chants referencing Jimmy Savile on Monday night. Birmingham City’s away following called for him to leave the club throughout the game, before loudly booing him as he went down the tunnel after losing to Leeds.

The former Manchester united striker took no issue with those chants, but he was not happy with a chant referencing Jimmy Savile. However, it is unclear whether these chants came from the home or away fans, with the Leeds faithful giving him plenty of abuse too.

“The only chant I didn’t appreciate really was the Jimmy Savile one. I just don’t think that’s acceptable,” Rooney said, as quoted by The Mirror.

Rooney left DC United before taking charge at Birmingham City, but now he’s back searching for a new job. It remains to be seen what he has planned next after a disappointing run in the Championship.
