Andre Onana has reportedly requested that Cameroon delay his meet-up with the squad for the Africa Cup of Nations, as per ESPN.
It was confirmed on Thursday morning that the shot-stopper had received a call-up for the tournament despite his notorious fallout with head coach Rigobert Song around the 2022 World Cup. Amends were eventually made between the pair and Onana has since returned to feature for his national team on numerous occasions over the past year, namely in their final AFCON qualifiers.
The 27-year-old, having endured a tumultuous start to life at Old Trafford, is seemingly concerned that he could lose his starting role if second-choice Altay Bayindir exceeds Erik ten Hag’s expectations in his absence.
This could then see Onana demoted to the bench upon his return from the Ivory Coast, where the competition is being held from January 13 to February 11.
Onana’s plea ahead of AFCON absence
ESPN’s article claims that the Cameroonian has asked to be available for United’s third-round FA Cup tie away to Wigan Athletic on January 8, which would mean he delays his arrival to his nation’s warm-up camp in Saudi Arabia and would be ruled out of their friendly on January 9 against Zambia.
