‘He makes a big difference’: Scholes believes returning United man will aid Hojlund’s goalscoring form

Paul Scholes, like all Manchester United supporters, was relieved to see Rasmus Hojlund net his maiden Premier League goal last night.

The 20-year-old endured a tedious 14-game wait before opening his account in England’s top division, and while he’ll have wished it came a lot sooner, it certainly made for a triumphant, memorable evening at Old Trafford.

Hojlund’s 82nd-minute winner sealed all three points for the Red Devils against Aston Villa after a tumultuous 90 minutes worth of action; United conceded two first-half goals to Unai Emery’s side before Alejandro Garnacho inspired a spirited comeback with his brace after the interval.

Alas, there is still work to be done for United from here, but Erik ten Hag will be adamant for his side to use the game as a turning point and to really kick on in the season. Similarly, now that Hojlund has one in the bag, he’ll be hoping to add more to his tally consistently over the course of the campaign.

Scholes reacts to Hojlund’s debut PL goal

Scholes reacted to the young Dane’s contribution and weighed in on whether the goal would ‘inject belief’ for Hojlund.

“That’s exactly what it should do,” Scholes told Premier League Productions, as cited by UtdDistrict. “It should take the handbrake off for him and should give him that bit of confidence that we expected from him. You know, we expect goals from him.

“He’s not got a great goalscoring record in the past (few months), but in the last few weeks, he’s not really had chances, so you can’t say he’s a bad finisher, I think, Champions League-wise.

“We know he can finish. If you watch the Champions League game, you watch his goals, some really composed finishes, and that goal again tonight. I think Christian Eriksen will help him be in the team, I’ve said that before the game, and I think he makes a big difference.

“I don’t think he’s especially brilliant tonight, but he’s the one player when they get the ball, him and Fernandes as well, they can get on their bike. They know that this ball – if they make the right run – it will come. Now, Eriksen has been out for a long time. He makes a big difference to this team.”
