Erik ten Hag explains why Rasmus Hojlund played just 57 minutes against West Ham

Manchester United’s horrific start to the season continued on Saturday as Erik ten Hag’s men fell to yet another defeat this year – this time at West Ham.

The 2-0 loss against the Hammers was United’s 13th defeat in all competitions so far this season as pressure continues to build on Ten Hag.

Three teenagers started at the London Stadium on Saturday, with Willy Kambwala making his first Premier League start for the Reds after Raphael Varane was struck with illness.

Eyes were also on forward Rasmus Hojlund amid the Danish international’s struggles in front of goal but fans were surprised to see him come off after just 57 minutes.

Speaking after the game, Ten Hag explained the decision to withdraw Hojlund, explaining the former Atalanta star had been ill in the days prior to United’s trip.

“I think he’s a very strong character and he can deal with the stress,” Ten Hag told the Manchester Evening News.

“I took him off as he was ill during the week, so a little bit lack of power, so in that sense I protected him. We have to play two more games this week but we can’t feel sorry for ourselves, no one.

“We have to take responsibility. If you are playing for Manchester United we have to do it together and everyone has to be accountable and take responsibility.”

Hojlund scored five goals in United’s brief Champions League campaign but has failed to find the net in the Premier League so far.

Pressure is building on the forward to open his account but after a lively start to life at Old Trafford, he is finding it increasingly difficult.
