United could activate clause in player’s contract that allows him to join Dortmund in January; he’s their ‘top target’

Borussia Dortmund have reportedly made Sergio Reguilon their ‘top target’ for the January transfer window, as per Patrick Berger of Sky Sports.

At present, the defender is on loan to Manchester United from Tottenham Hotspur having made a deadline-day switch in the summer.

He had fallen out of favour in North London and was sought by the Red Devils to provide coverage for sidelined left-backs Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw, but went on to struggle with injury concerns himself, being limited to just seven starts in all competitions.

Shaw has since returned from his layoff to reclaim his starting role in the backline, meaning Reguilon’s game-time would only decrease further should he stay for the second half of the campaign – especially given United’s exit from Europe and the Carabao Cup.

Reguilon’s loan likely to be cut short

Alas, Erik ten Hag and the board may instead opt to trigger the break clause that United and Spurs included in the Spaniard’s contract terms. This would see him sent back to Ange Postecoglou’s squad, where he can then freely depart for Dortmund should a deal be agreed.

Dortmund remain in the Champions League and will face Eredivisie leaders PSV in the Round of 16 but face a fight to improve their Bundesliga form, as they currently sit fifth-placed and five points behind Stuttgart in fourth.
