Former Liverpool and Republic of Ireland star Jason McAteer has hit back at Roy Keane after the Manchester United legend spoke about their feud on a recent podcast.

Keane appeared on The Overlap with Gary Neville when he insisted that McAteer deserved the elbow that he flung his way during a clash against Sunderland in 2002.

As a fellow Irishman, I couldn’t agree more and I remember the incident well. McAteer had been pulling out of Keane, losing to get a rise out of him and that’s exactly what he got.

Keane also dismissed any talk of the pair striking up a friendship during their time together with the Republic of Ireland team.

Speaking about the handbags incident in 2002, Keane said: “Just because you play with someone doesn’t mean you’re mates. Do you know what, he was one of these players who shout their mouths off. I didn’t mind lads kicking me or booting me, honestly, but McAteer as usual had plenty to say for himself.

“But even then, I didn’t deserve to be sent off in that game, absolutely not. If you look back on it, I didn’t even catch him.”

The proof in is in the pudding that McAteer always has something to say for himself, as Keane claims. He took to social media to write a response to Keane’s comments: “Love it. Players shouting their mouths off!!! Funny you can’t shut the clown now.

“And no we weren’t team-mates cause he never showed up and when he did he went home!!!! Please!!!! Bore off.”

Someone sounds upset. Hopefully McAteer can get the help he needs. Not everyone wants to be your friend.

Also, ask anyone in Ireland about national sporting legends and they won’t mention McAteer. Who?
