Lisandro Martinez says he is having to be patient in his recovery from injury.
The Argentine suffered a second metatarsal injury in the space of five months and he is currently a long-term absentee.
Martinez first sustained a fracture back in April but didn’t look fully fit when he returned for pre-season. However, the same problem re-emerged in September’s 3-1 defeat to Arsenal but Martinez played through the pain in matches against Brighton and Bayern Munich.
It came as a big blow for Erik ten Hag’s side and we’ve struggled defensively as a result.
The centre-back is back in Argentina and recently attended a domestic match at former club Defensa y Justicia. He was asked about his recovery.
Martinez told TNT Sports Argentina: “I am in the process of recovery and happy to be here visiting the club. It is the second time that an injury like this has happened to me. So, you have to be patient.”
The injury to Martinez has meant more game time for Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans. Three centre-backs we wouldn’t be sorry to see play their football elsewhere.
United missing Martinez
I would go as far to say Martinez and Luke Shaw have been our biggest losses through injury this season. Our build up play has suffered as a result and we’re not progressing as a team as a result.
This is why Ten Hag wanted a new left-sided centre-back in the summer. Sadly, he didn’t get one because United were unable to sell Harry Maguire.
