Manchester United establish interest in 18 y/o La Liga starlet to bolster wing options – report

Manchester United are reportedly targeting Real Betis starlet Assane Diao to bolster their options on the wing.

The 18-year-old made the move from Balon de Cadiz to Betis’ academy in 2021. Having initially signed on a five-year contract, he extended his stay in July until 2027.

Diao made his debut for the La Liga outfit on September 21 when he came off the bench to see out a Europa League clash vs Rangers.

Since then, he has scored three goals in a further four appearances; against Sparta Prague in the Europa League, and against Granada and Valencia in the league – so it’s no wonder why Diao has caught the eye of United’s scouts.

Born in Senegal, the teenager has opted to represent Spain – having moved to the country at three years old – at youth level and represented the nation in the Under-19 Euro 2023.

United’s interest in Diao

Spanish outlet Fichajes reports that United have identified Diao as a realistic option to add to Erik ten Hag’s attacking options. His contract includes a €30 million release clause though, which is considerably high for a player with such little senior experience.

It’d certainly be worth waiting and seeing how Diao fares for Betis over the course of the season, and perhaps next, before activating the clause or making a formal approach.
