Gary Neville not surprised by Crystal Palace defeat

Gary Neville says he wasn’t surprised to see Manchester United lose to Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The former Manchester United right-back suggests the changes made to the team that beat Palace on Wednesday night were a key factor.

In the Carabao Cup tie, United breezed past Roy Hodgson’s side as Erik ten Hag made seven changes to the side. Most of the players that returned to the line-up on Saturday didn’t perform, excluding Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund, who did the best they could all things considered.

One player I thought we missed was Hannibal Mejbri, while Facundo Pellistri came in and offered little in the final third.

“I haven’t seen the game today [Saturday], they may have been absolutely amazing and lost 1-0 but it doesn’t surprise me that this has happened today against the same club. It doesn’t surprise me one bit,” Neville told Sky Sports.

“I can’t put my finger on it yet until I watch the game back but honestly I didn’t tweet out on Wednesday but I wish I had because that is what I was feeling, on Saturday we will bring a few players back and we will be back to normal again and (shrugs his shoulders) that is what they have got. They’ve lost at home and they are on a really poor run.

“I don’t think it will be right for quite some time. I am not going to go on about the owners again because people are bored of it, but it will go on for quite some time because there is a cultural reset required at the club.”

Something needs to change in order for results to improve. Ten Hag needs to have a rethink about the players he can trust and that will be easier when key personnel return from injury.

At the same time, I don’t think Neville should retract from the his criticism of the Glazers. He should keep it up more than anything, and stop pretending that he likes Liverpool!
