Manchester United will try to sign a left-back in the closing stages of the transfer window, as per Manchester Evening News.

It comes after The Athletic confirmed on Thursday evening that Luke Shaw had sustained an injury and will be sidelined for an extended period, which comes as a significant blow to Erik ten Hag after a shaky start to the season.

Next in line on the left flank is Tyrell Malacia, who is currently also ruled out with a long-term problem. 22-year-old Brandon Williams completed his loan move to Ipswich Town yesterday so the only remaining option for Ten Hag is Alvaro Fernandez – unless he deploys Diogo Dalot out of position.

United could block Fernandez exit

Fernandez, 20, has been heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford this summer, with Granada deemed the most likely candidate to secure his services. That transfer may have to be blocked now.

The youngster is yet to make his first-team debut but may be thrown in at the deep end over the coming weeks until United acquire a suitable replacement.
