Fabrizio Romano claims United midfielder missed Spurs clash due to transfer negotiations

Fabrizio Romano has explained why Harry Maguire and Donny van de Beek were absent from the squad that fell to a 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur earlier on Saturday.

Erik ten Hag’s men were rolled over in the second half of the game, with Spurs cruising to victory as they claimed their first three points of the season and ending United’s unbeaten streak at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Maguire was on the verge of joining West Ham earlier this month but a transfer fell through over a lack of agreement on personal terms with the London Club. The former Reds skipper was left out of the squad against Tottenham due to a ‘minor injury’, according to journalist and transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano.

Romano also provided an update on Van de Beek, who was also missing from the squad. Van de Beek played a prominent role in United’s pre-season preparations but has not made a competitive appearance this season.

It has been rumoured that Real Sociedad have been keen to sign the Dutchman and now, Romano has claimed that Van de Beek was left out of the squad due to negotiations over his exit.

It’s fair to assume that Van de Beek’s days at United may be numbered at this point and that an exit is imminent and in truth, it has been overdue.

Van de Beek was cruelly hit with a serious knee injury halfway through last season and has not had the chance to impress suitors over the last year but hopefully, he will return to the form that convinced United to sign him from Ajax three years ago.
