David de Gea’s current contract at Manchester United will expire at midnight on Friday and there’s no shortage of reports suggesting his 12-year stint with the club is nearing the end.
Although Erik ten Hag stuck with the Spaniard as his No.1 last season, I think everyone can see what he’s trying to do with the team and De Gea doesn’t possess some of the key attributes he needs in a goalkeeper.
De Gea picked up the Golden Glove award last season and may feel disrespected by all the speculation that surrounds his future, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t move on to improve the team.
According to the Manchester Evening News, the club have still not made a decision on De Gea’s future.
They have under 40 hours to make a decision…
The 32-year-old is not one for letting on he pays attention to media reports, but he tweeted a yawning emoji on Wednesday evening following claims United pulled out of a contract offer after he had signed the dotted line.
With De Gea unlikely to be No. 1 next season, one would think that it would be best for all parties concerned to go their separate ways this summer.
That also raises the question about whether De Gea has any offers other than some club in Saudi Arabia with an endless cash flow.
Inter Milan’s Andre Onana is being heavily linked for a reunion with his former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag.
Meanwhile, FC Porto keeper Diogo Costa is another popular candidate among the fan base.
