Manchester United have been pursuing a deal to sign Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount this month but after making three offers and seeing all of them return unsuccessful, it was reported that United had parked their interest in the England star.

Mount has just one year remaining on his contract at Chelsea and he has no intentions of committing his long-term future to the club, making him a prime candidate to strengthen Erik ten Hag’s midfield.

United’s most recent offer, believed to be at £55m, was rejected by Chelsea earlier this week and although initial reports claimed that the Reds had dropped their offer, there are now conflicting reports.

The latest update comes from The Telegraph, who say that United’s latest bid remains on the table for Chelsea to accept but that negotiations have ultimately hit an impasse.

It’s claimed that despite the deal currently not being pursued, it’s still United’s preference to sign Mount, who is said to be keen on joining the Reds.

Chelsea’s valuation and their reluctance to negotiate a price closer to the bids lodged by United are named as reasons for the impasse, with Old Trafford clubs growing increasingly frustrated after it emerged Mateo Kovacic would be joining Manchester City for just £30m.

United are now looking at alternatives and they would like to sign another midfielder in addition to Mount, with Ten Hag seemingly looking to bolster his middle third once more after going big last summer.

SN’s verdict…
Moises Caicedo is rumoured to be one of the alternatives to Mount and that has been popular among the United fanbase. But it cannot be forgotten that Ten Hag had full control of last year’s target and all of his signings have proved to be good additions.

There is quite a bit to run on this story and we definitely have not heard the last of it.

  1. there is always a united tax and tbf to other clubs why wouldnt there be? united spent 85m on antony just last year so we can’t exactly complain that clubs take the mickey.

for united to stop getting quoted silly money they need to stop paying silly money and there is no sign that that has yet started even under ETH.
