Luke Shaw has reflected on watching rivals Manchester City complete a treble by lifting their maiden Champions League trophy.

In 1999, Manchester United became the first-ever English team to achieve the historic feat under Sir Alex Ferguson, and have boasted the bragging rights for 23 years that they were the only ones to do so.

Now, of course, they share those honours. But nothing can take away from the fact that they did it first, and without 115 pending financial fair play charges against their name.

Still, it’s always difficult to stomach when your most bitter rivals are sweeping up trophies season after season, all while your club is in a state of transition and rebuild.

There have been undeniable signals of progress and change under Erik ten Hag though, one major one being that United ended a six-year trophy drought last season by winning the Carabao Cup.

If anything, last season’s affairs with the Blues will only motivate the players to up the ante. Shaw had his say on the matter (via Match of the Day), saying: “It was extremely hard watching City. I was not happy one bit with that. We can’t let that happen again. It hurt me a lot and the club and the players.”

  1. Plastic Treble by a plastic club with plastic fans.
And they’re still trying to pretend they can’t see a difference between given as much money as they need, and actually earning it.
Overall, I think I prefer Scousers. ( dons hard hat and dives under table.) At least they’re a real club – not a sports-washing ‘project; said project being ‘ how many trophies do we need to buy to make people overlook our appalling human rights record? ‘
