David de Gea is out of contract this month but nothing has been confirmed about a new deal yet. That has led to more speculation about Manchester United signing a new goalkeeper ahead of the new season.
We’ve ran reports on all the names involved in United’s apparent search — from Diogo Costa and Bert Verbruggen — but uncertainty remains over De Gea.
Manchester United are now considering a move for goalkeeper Andre Onana, according to The Athletic.
It is believed that Chelsea have also had talks with the 27-year-old, but one report this week suggested that Onana would prefer a move to United. However, one slight problem exists with Inter demanding up to £70m as a transfer fee for the keeper.
Erik ten Hag knows Onana from his time at Ajax, where the Cameroon international first caught the eye with his exceptional passing range and willingness to come off his line. The manager needs a keeper who is naturally suited to playing out from the back, whereas this is an area of weakness for De Gea.
The Athletic also explains that if De Gea stays it is expected that United would look to sign a young back-up keeper, who could develop at the club.
That’s where Anderlecht’s Verbruggen could emerge as a serious target but Burnley and Brighton are interested in the 20-year-old.
