Lisandro Martinez has lifted the lid on a special relationship with Manchester United supporters.
It didn’t take long for the Argentine to become a fan-favourite amongst the Old Trafford faithful; the instant impact he had on the squad and the sheer passion he shows on the pitch are exactly what fans are desperate to see from new signings.
He completely revitalised the United backline and not only with his exceptional defensive abilities, but he is also outstanding on the ball and in attack. His long-range, defence-splitting passes have proven pivotal in matches.
Unfortunately, Martinez saw his season cut short after he sustained a metatarsal injury back in April, meaning he watched on for the remainder of the campaign from the sidelines.
He is expected to return to full fitness soon, though, and should be fit to feature in the Reds’ pre-season tour that starts in July.
Martinez reflects on first season as a Red
When reflecting on his first term in Manchester, the 25-year-old spoke on the impact of the fans.
He told MUTV: “I really feel the love of the fans, I also feel a lot of love for them. I really like this connection because it’s very important. Sometimes that support, that fire, wins games. You see it, the stadium is on fire. It’s part of that connection.”
Martinez added: “I’m enjoying [being at United] a lot. I’m enjoying every day here – in the training, the dressing room, in the games, at Old Trafford. I think I am enjoying it a lot. I’m really happy to be here. Like I said, I’m enjoying it. I think it is a big dream of mine to be here and I am really happy.
“To be honest, football is a big part of my life, I live for football. Yeah, I love football. I give everything for it. Like I said in many interviews before, football is life. You have to fight for that. You have to fight for, I say, always the food. In the game, if someone takes your food, you have to fight. You can’t give in easily to them.”
