Casemiro passionately reviews first season at Manchester United

Casemiro was a surprise signing at the end of last summer’s transfer window and his arrival was met by waves of criticism from some supporters but mainly pundits and experts.

The Brazil international has, like many of the other summer signings that year, proven doubters wrong as he showed exactly why he has been one of the best in his position for the best part of a decade.

Casemiro almost immediately became one of the first names on the teamsheet under Erik ten Hag and now, with his first season at Old Trafford over, he has reflected on where he believes United are going.

Speaking to the club’s official media, the five-time Champions League winner passionately reviewed United’s campaign, insisting they are absolutely on the right path after securing a return to Europe’s fine dining table and winning the Carabao Cup.

“It’s absolutely right that we’re on the right track,” Casemiro is quoted as saying by the official Manchester United website.

“I believe that we’ve been picking up on the mentality of the manager and the way that he wants us to play. It’s true that, in football terms, it’s very well, well not early, we already have our own philosophy, but, when you’re talking about football, it’s difficult because the manager is relatively new.

“We’ve been together one season. We know that other sides have also taken a while to start winning things, like Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea, who have also taken a while to start winning things with their other managers.

“And so we are on an upward curve. We’re taking on board the manager’s ideas and philosophy, and so we need to keep going step by step, gradually growing and improving.

“Of course, next season, it will also be very important for us to keep going with this growth.”

SN’s verdict…
Casemiro has become a symbol of everything that Ten Hag has done right in his first year at United and there are no signs of him slowing down anytime soon. He will continue to be an integral cog in Ten Hag’s machinery next season.

He has displayed immense leadership on and off the pitch, notably when United and Brighton went the distance in the FA Cup semi-final and he offered to take the first penalty.

His calm maneurism from 12 yards set the tone for the rest of the shootout and supporters don’t need to be reminded of what happened next.
