Jamie Carragher criticises David de Gea after FA Cup final defeat

Jamie Carragher believes Manchester United need a new goalkeeper as much as they need to sign a centre-forward this summer.

Most Manchester United fans are in agreement that a striker should be priority this summer. It’s been a good season on the pitch which plenty of noticeable improvements, but we didn’t score anywhere near enough goals with the goalscoring burden set on Marcus Rashford.

Rashford had his best season yet with 30 goals across all competitions, but we need a centre-forward to hit those numbers on top of that if we want to challenge for the biggest honours.

However, there’s also an argument to be had over whether United need a new goalkeeper. That conversation is only going to intensity with David de Gea yet to sign a new deal as well as the FA Cup final defeat against Man City.

Ilkay Gündogan’s brace was too much for a Bruno Fernandes penalty as City won the game 2-1. The German midfielder opened the scoring after just 13 seconds with a volley that left United’s defence and keeper stunned.

De Gea was at fault for Gundogan’s goal when he should have a lot better to palm the shot wide of the goalposts. Instead he got a weak hand on it but it wasn’t enough to prevent the ball from hitting the back of the net.

United have been linked with a number of goalkeepers, but it looks like De Gea will get a new deal at the club. That raises question marks about whether he will remain first choice next term. Many Reds, including myself, think it is time to move him on.

Carragher believes a new keeper now represents a priority for Ten Hag. He tweeted: “David de Gea is a big problem for Man United! Is fixing that position more important than them signing a striker?”

I don’t think it would be fair to say we lost the final because of De Gea, but his weaknesses have been clear to see this season.

A striker would still by priority for me – but that doesn’t mean a new keeper should be on the agenda too.
