Erik ten Hag has defended Antony following his frustrated display during last night’s defeat at the Amex.

Unpunished fouls and lack of intervention from Andre Marriner had tensions rising during Manchester United’s trip to face Brighton and Hove Albion last night – until it eventually reached boiling point.

Antony was fouled by Alexis Mac Allister, with the referee deeming it a fair challenge, and retaliated by kicking the Argentinian and creating a heated brawl late in the second half.

The winger pushed and squared up to Lewis Dunk before both players received yellow cards. Antony’s national teammate Fred was quick on the scene to try and calm his fellow Red down, but it was clear that an incident like that was on the cards all night.

Personally, I think you should want to see your players fighting and getting riled up on the pitch. Not always to the point that it ends in bookings, but Antony is clearly a passionate player who fights for the badge, which was proven by his actions when he headed to the bench.

Ten Hag backs Antony

Ten Hag has also backed the Brazilian following his outburst, saying (via the Man Utd website): “I think his passion is a strength. Of course, there is a certain level. You have to control it. You need passion and desire to win your games and to win battles in the game. I think this is very strong with him, he is very ambitious. So, as I say, don’t go over the top. Stay focused on your game and what the game needs. If he does that, he is a great player.”
