Alejandro Garnacho has been the big breakthrough star at Manchester United this season, with the young Argentine increasingly growing into an influential figure at the club.
The former Atletico Madrid star was used sparingly by Erik ten Hag at last summer’s pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia but since then, he has wasted no time in making a name for himself.
Garnacho has already scored a number of memorable late winners and now, he has committed his long-term future to the club by signing a new five-year deal.
The news came after months of speculation over his future, with Premier League rivals said to be weighing up a move for the exciting winger.
Speaking after putting pen-to-paper on his fresh terms, Garnacho has vowed to keep building on what he views as a ‘positive’ first season with the first team.
“It’s a great day for me and my family. And I have worked a lot for this moment,” Garnacho said, according to the official Manchester United website.
“I want to say thank you to the manager first because he gave me the opportunity. And of course, my family, all Academy coaches, and everyone [who has] helped me so much.
“I wouldn’t be here signing this new contract without their support.
“It’s been a positive season for me. Scoring my first goals, helping the team on with my first trophy. It’s been a special year but it’s just the start. We have to keep working, we have more work to do.”
Garnacho has spent the last six weeks on the sidelines after he sustained a serious ankle injury in a Premier League game against Southampton.
The 18-year-old’s recovery is, however, progressing well and although he is not ready to feature in Sunday’s game against Aston Villa, he is back in training and should be returning to action soon to take part in United’s gruelling run-in.
