Why Manchester United were wise to tie down Luke Shaw to extended deal – opinion

It was confirmed today that Luke Shaw had penned a new four-year deal with Manchester United, keeping him at Old Trafford until the summer of 2027.

I think the club were right to do so and especially with how quickly they got the deal done. Shaw has been integral to Erik ten Hag’s project this season and fans have witnessed a real resurgence in the defender’s form and contributions to the team.

To be honest, it may have been the addition of Tyrell Malacia that sparked a boost of ambition in Shaw to really prove himself and earn his place under Ten Hag because, in recent years, it was just expected that he’d be named in the starting line-up each week.

United boast one of the best left-backs in Europe

When fully fit, the 27-year-old is irreplaceable in the squad and is undoubtedly one of the best left-backs across Europe, hence why he is also one of Gareth Southgate’s most trusted lieutenants.

If United didn’t renew his deal, I don’t doubt for a second that another top club would’ve come in for him. He’d have likely known that as well but was keen on committing his future to the club and seeing what we can achieve in this new era.
