Erik ten Hag reflects on Manchester United’s options at right-back

Erik ten Hag appears to be satisfied with the competition he has at right-back. The Manchester United manager says there is “really close competition” between right-backs Diogo Dalot and Aaron-Wan-Bissaka.

Dalot was our primary right-back throughout the first half of the season, but following the restart in December, Wan-Bissaka has started 16 of United’s 26 matches.

Both players have their pros and cons but they couldn’t be more different. Dalot is better at getting forward, while Wan-Bissaka is known as a good 1v1 defender.

“I think it’s really close between them,” Ten Hag said, as per Manchester Evening News. “So maybe Aaron gives you a little bit more defending, Diogo a little bit more offence. They both made progress in both areas, so it’s really close.

“Then you look at the opponent, you look at the load of the players to manage when you have almost two equal players, the form, where they are in, is also an issue. And of course, how is the team, how are they doing in the moment, and you make your decisions.”

Ten Hag managed to address United’s problems at left-back in his first summer at the club. He decided to send Alex Telles out on loan and signed Tyrell Malacia as back-up for Luke Shaw. In turn, United have two good options on the left.

I think the two current options on the right are below par and hopefully that is addressed in the summer.
