Manchester United join Premier League rivals in race for Dortmund goalkeeper

Manchester United are interested in Borussia Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel.

According to Patrick Berger of Sport1, the Red Devils have joined Chelsea in the running for Kobel, though the goalkeeper is unwilling to leave Dortmund this summer, as he believes he can continue to develop with the club.

The report confirms that the 25-year-old, whose contract expires in 2026, would like to stay at least one more season at the Signal Iduna Park. There is no release clause included in his current deal.

So far this season, Kobel has kept 12 clean sheets in 25 appearances across all competitions.

Why United and Chelsea are keen on Kobel

The Blues met with the Swiss international’s agent before they took on Dortmund at Stamford Bridge last week, with Todd Boehly and co looking to improve on their current options between the sticks.

Similarly, David de Gea has come under fire in recent seasons for his fluctuating form, mistakes and inability to play out from the back – a technique that top clubs across Europe have developed to their advantage.

It is unconfirmed whether or not he will be the Reds’ No.1 beyond the summer. His contract will expire at the end of the season but talks have been ongoing between the club and player regarding an extended deal on reduced wages, as he is currently United’s highest earner.
