Manchester United set to relaunch pursuit of Frenkie de Jong

It sounds like Manchester United are planning another pursuit to sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona in the summer.

According to The Guardian, Manchester United will revive their interest in the Netherlands star later this year.

The Reds spent over 100 days of last summer’s transfer window chasing Erik ten Hag’s primary target, but Frenkie de Jong remained at Barcelona and our attention (thankfully) switched to signing a defensive midfielder. Little did we know that United would end up signing the best defensive midfielder in the world from Real Madrid.

Casemiro has been an incredible signing for United. The thought of adding De Jong to the mix excites me to a degree, although I can’t quite shift the fact he wasn’t keen to come last year.

Barcelona were prepared to sell De Jong due to financial constraints. It was the Dutchman who refused to be sold and he has since been a regular in Xavi’s midfield.

Meanwhile, Barcelona have been instructed to sell €200 million worth of playing if they are to have any chance of signing players in the upcoming transfer window. The La Liga club pulled a number of ‘economic levers’ to fund a heavy window of recruitment last summer. Their strategy was very short-term and it has come back to bite them in the rear end.

Erik ten Hag will hope Barcelona’s transfer ban helps push De Jong through the door at Camp Nou.

The report also states that Ten Hag’s transfer budget will be determined by United’s own finances. He may need to sell a number of players before he can add quality to the squad.

Let us know in the comments section if you think Ten Hag is right to go for De Jong again, or should United move on since the former Ajax star made it clear he wasn’t interested in moving to Old Trafford previously?
