Harry Maguire makes captain’s decision on potential EFL trophy lift

Harry Maguire will let Bruno Fernandes lift the EFL Cup if Manchester United beat Newcastle United at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

That’s according to a recent report from The Mirror, who claims Maguire, technically the Red Devils’ captain, is willing to jointly lift the trophy with deputy skipper Fernandes should the side win later today.

Following the brilliant centre-back partnership between Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez Maguire, 29, has fallen out of favour with Erik Ten Hag.

Resigned to nothing more than a backup role, United’s captain is facing an uncertain future and looks likely to leave the club in the summer.

However, before the summer transfer window opens, United have at least one major cup final to play and up first is today’s EFL Cup final against Eddie Howe’s flying Magpies.

Understandably red-hot favourites to lift the first major piece of silverware on offer this season, United are many fans’ pick to leave London victorious, and should that happen, Maguire is willing to allow Fernandes the chance to get his hands on the cup first.
