Gary Neville likens Chelsea owner Todd Boehly to Ed Woodward

Gary Neville has always been less than complimentary about former Manchester United executive Ed Woodward and he has gone on to make a comparison with new Chelsea owner Todd Boehly.

Chelsea have spent around £600 million since last summer on transfers, so it is no wonder that Todd Boehly has come under a lot of criticism in the media for his approach… not to mention the Financial Fair Play loophole he has played with in the transfer window.

Gary Neville is the latest to criticise the American investor by comparing him to Ed Woodward.

Speaking on The Overlap, as cited by Sportsbible, Neville said: “Todd Boehly smacks of Ed Woodward when he first came to Manchester United and wanted to sign everyone.”

It goes without saying that Woodward is considered an unpopular figure among United fans. He acted as a Glazer puppet for years and helped the American family to milk what they saw as a commercial cash cow.

Neville went on to admit Chelsea’s strategy in the transfer market has left him scratching his head. They broke the record for the most expensive transfer window in the summer with expenditure in excess of €250m. New additions continued to make their way to Stamford Bridge in January with the Blues signings Mykhailo Mudryk, Joao Felix, Benoit Badiashile, David Datro Fofana, and Noni Madueke.

Neville added: “Marc Cucurella for £64m and Enzo Fernandes for £107m – that’s a full-back and a midfielder who will sit at the base of a three.

“The ceiling on those types of players — like Rodri, Fabinho, Casemiro — they are £50m-60m positions.

“These aren’t players that are playing in the forward part of the pitch and scoring you 30 goals, so what they’re paying for the positions, what they’re getting for the money, they just seem like strange transfers.

“I’m not saying the players are not good. They could be really good and could go on to be great. But the fees for players in those positions seem mad to me.”
