Three observations as Manchester United beat Nottingham Forest to reach Carabao Cup final

Manchester United are going to Wembley where they will face Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final.

After getting a lot of the work done in the first leg, having thumped Nottingham Forest 3-0 at the City Ground, Manchester United were able to get the job done tonight thanks to two goals in three minutes from Anthony Martial and Fred.

Erik ten Hag’s side will take on Newcastle at Wembley in just over three week’s time.

United will be looking to win their first trophy since 2017.

Without further ado, here are three observations we took from the game:

Poor decisions from officials

United were unfortunate to not have been awarded a penalty midway through the second half.

Forest were trying to clear the ball away from their box when Wout Weghorst crossed Scott McKenna’s path. The Dutch striker won the ball cleanly but was hacked down inside the box.

McKenna’s guilty look said it all.

We hope the officials do a better job in the final.

Jadon Sancho playing as a No. 10

It was interesting to see Sancho take up his position as a No 10 when he came off the bench. This call saw Bruno Fernandes move to the right and it’s something we might see more of in the future.

All three of Sancho’s goals this season came from central positions. He also likes to drift in from wide positions, whereas Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford hold the width a lot better.

It’s definitely something I can get behind and I’m delighted to see him back on the pitch with a smile on his face.

Marcel Sabitzer in the directors’ box

While Sabitzer was a surprise arrival on deadline day, we expected the Austria international to make his first public appearance as a Manchester United player at Old Trafford tonight. He was pictured in the stands during the game.

We have no doubt that he will be looking forward to playing a role in the Carabao Cup.
