Manchester United will receive significantly less than what they paid for Harry Maguire if the defender leaves the club in the summer.

The Englishman remains the most expensive defender in the world and his £80 million price tag has haunted him ever since he signed for United. With a transfer fee that high, the expectations are too. Every performance is magnified and analysed.

Ultimately, his time at United has not lived up to the hype, but he has still been a loyal servant to the club and has proven his quality time and time again. The past couple of seasons, in particular, have likely contributed to his lack of confidence on the pitch as the ridicule and criticism have been non-stop.

Maguire faces uncertainty over future

According to Chris Wheeler of the Daily Mail, the 29-year-old faces a fight for his future at Old Trafford and his exit in the summer transfer window is “more likely” than in January.

He also suggested that the Reds “are unlikely to get half of the £80 million they paid” for him.
