Former Manchester United duo question Anthony Martial

Rio Ferdinand hopes Anthony Martial is going hard on himself in terms of not being happy with his Manchester United career to date.

Many thought Manchester United had a world beater on their hands when Martial emerged with a goal on his debut against Liverpool. The club invested a lot of money to bring him to Old Trafford from AS Monaco, but he has yet to reach the heights that were expected of him following a bright start.

Although Martial has had his problems with injuries this season, with setbacks occurring on a regular basis, he has five goals in 10 games this season.

As things stand, the Frenchman is Erik ten Hag’s only number 9 so he will get chances to prove himself this season. I hate to think what will happen if Martial fails to deliver.

Ferdinand is not wrong when he describes Martial’s career to date as being very stop-start.

“I’d love to find out from him, is he is satisfied with what he’s doing in a Man United shirt?,” Ferdinand said ahead of the game against Wolves, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News.

“I hope he is not happy because there’s so much more. When he burst onto the scene at Old Trafford scoring those goals against Liverpool, everyone’s going ‘Oh my God, this teenager’, £50m, Thierry Henry vibes.”

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes joined Ferdinand in the BT Sports studio. He added: “There’s no doubt he’s got everything. He can go either way, he’s strong, powerful, mentality might be the only question mark.

“Can he do it? Can he fire Man United to win the league? Can he score 25 goals? Can he be consistent?”

Martial had one of his worst games against Wolves. He was non-existent until Ten Hag decided to take him off in the second half.
