Erik ten Hag provides update on the return of Varane, Martinez and Maguire for Forest clash

Erik ten Hag has issued a team news update ahead of tomorrow’s clash with Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils return to Premier League action for the first time since November 13, with their last home league game taking place on October 30.

They will face Nottingham Forest for the first time since 1999 in the Midlands side’s first campaign back in the top flight for 23 years. Forest have overseen a lacklustre start to the season; losing eight games and sitting 19th in the table.

However, their last league match before the international break was a victory against Crystal Palace and they will be hoping to pick up where they left off in their quest to move out of the relegation zone.

United’s centre-back conundrum for Forest

United’s first match after the World Cup was a 2-0 home win against Burnley last Wednesday. Ten Hag opted to start five players who had returned from Qatar, with Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane yet to partake in training since the final on December 18. Club captain Harry Maguire also missed the tie through illness.

Ten Hag told MUTV today: “We had some problems with illness like Harry Maguire, but he was back on the training pitch today so I’m happy with that. Returning from Rapha Varane and Licha Martinez, they are not there [back at United], but we hope on their comeback [soon].”
