Mikael Silvestre believes Manchester United full-back has made position his own

Former Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre is an admirer of Diogo Dalot.

The former France international claims the Portugal star has made the full-back position his own at Old Trafford, in his first season under Erik ten Hag.

This is some improvement for a player who was previously overlooked for Aaron Wan-Bissaka. The former Crystal Palace full-back appears to have no way back into the team under Ten Hag.

Anyhow, Silvestre said: “Diogo has been improving in his defending but from the time he joined United I thought that was the weaker side of his game,” Silvestre said, as per the Manchester Evening News. “Offensively he’s very good, which is the case for most modern full backs.”

“Trent Alexander-Arnold is also in that build in terms of being extremely important offensively but the downside is positioning and 1v1 situations.”

“He was given a chance and has done really well at United as he didn’t have much game time at the start of his United career. He’s made that position his.”

Personally, I think the jury is still out on Dalot and he has to prove himself throughout the second half of the season before any judgements will be made over whether he should be first choice right-back for the long-term future.

Ten Hag needs to sign another right-back regardless – unless Ethan Laird returns and is ready to fight for a place with Dalot. I certainly think the attack-minded full-back is better suited than Wan-Bissaka.

Let us know if you are convinced that Dalot has made the right-back position his own this season.
