Manchester United players congratulate Lisandro Martinez on World Cup triumph

Lisandro Martinez is a World Cup winner and his Manchester United team-mates were quick to send congratulatory messages after Argentina beat France on penalties in the final.

Many dismissed Argentina as favourites when they lost their opening game to Saudi Arabia, but Lionel Scaloni’s men went on a run of six straight wins to claim their third World Cup third.

It was also the perfect way for Lionel Messi to end his international career, at 35, but I’m sure there will be Argentina fans hoping he sticks around for the next Copa America. He completed the grand slam of all football’s major awards winning the World Cup at the fifth time of asking.

As Manchester United fans, however, we can share sympathy for Raphael Varane as well as glee for Lisandro Martinez. Varane looked shattered at the end of the match, while Martinez didn’t come off the bench.

Nobody can doubt the role Martinez had in Argentina’s triumph after the United defender made 4 appearances throughout the tournament.

Several United players have commented on Martinez’ Instagram profile.

Martinez shared an image showing him lifting the World Cup trophy.

Alejandro Garnacho responded with a smiley and heart eyes emojis, while Facundo Pellistri wrote: “Congratulations crack! You deserve it.”

Meanwhile, Scott McTominay uploaded a picture of Martinez holding the trophy to his story with the caption: “Congratulations my brother!”

On a slightly different note, U21s player-coach Tom Huddlestone tweeted a poll and we think he is referencing the old Cristiano Ronaldo vs Messi debate.

Congrats Licha!
