Portugal eliminated by Morocco as Diogo Dalot sustains injury

Portugal have been eliminated from this winter’s World Cup after suffering a surprise defeat against Morocco, who are through to the semi-finals as the first African team to do so.

Portugal had been impressive up until this point, convincingly sealing their place in the quarter-finals with a 6-1 win over Switzerland earlier this week.

Bruno Fernandes was one of their outstanding players, scoring two goals and assisting a further three goals in their run to the quarter-final.

Diogo Dalot started the first two games on the bench but eventually nailed down that right-back position, with Manchester City star Joao Cancelo left to watch from the bench.

The young full-back has enjoyed a stellar season but toward the end of their narrow defeat to Morocco, he pulled up with what looked to be a hamstring injury.

He was almost immediately withdrawn from the game and he looked to be in real discomfort as he briefed the issue to Portugal’s medical team.

Prior to the win over Fulham last month, United’s last game before the season was paused to accommodate the World Cup, Dalot had started every single competitive game for the Reds.

Erik ten Hag will be hoping that Dalot’s withdrawal was precautionary and nothing serious, with club football resuming in just 11 days as United welcome Burnley to Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup.
