Fabrizio Romano claims PSV plans could change after Cody Gakpo’s stunning World Cup

PSV and Netherlands star Cody Gakpo is taking this winter’s World Cup by storm and his stunning form comes just months after Manchester United reportedly tried to sign him.

Gakpo was one of two Eredivise wingers to be linked with a move to United in the final weeks of this year’s summer transfer window but Antony, the former Ajax star, ended up joining the club.

Links to Gakpo have not stopped since, however, and the forward has been in sparkling form all season. Additionally, he is the joint-top goalscorer at the World Cup with three goals in as many games.

In the latest update on Gakpo’s future, journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed that PSV could change their plans.

As per Romano, as seen above, there is now the feeling that Gakpo could depart the Dutch giants as early as this coming January transfer window.

It’s claimed that PSV, who are managed by Reds hero Ruud van Nistelrooy, had originally planned on parting ways with Gakpo in the summer but those plans could be pushed forward now after his stellar World Cup performances.

Furthermore, Romano adds fuel to fire by confirming that the player’s representatives have remained in contact with United since the summer.

SN’s verdict…
Cristiano Ronaldo’s controversial departure has certainly left a hole in the United squad and Erik ten Hag will be desperate for that to be filled as soon as possible.

As things stand, the club only has one out-and-out striker and that’s Anthony Martial, who continues to be plagued by neverending fitness problems.

Alejandro Garnacho’s emergence will ease the burden on Ten Hag but Gakpo is clearly a player he is interested in. It remains to be seen whether the club is willing to take a chance on him.
