England star claims Harry Maguire deserves more respect

England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has called for Harry Maguire to be shown more respect as the Manchester United skipper continues to prove his worth to Gareth Southgate’s side at the World Cup.

Maguire has been on the receiving end of strong criticism for well over a year, but as a United fan I am hoping he can enjoy the World Cup before returning with some confidence. It’s not easy to perform when you are low in confidence and a lot of the Maguire-related criticism you see on social media feels hard.

However, Pickford is England’s first choice goalkeeper, so he is bound to have a long-standing relationship with Southgate’s most important defender. The team’s defence has been the foundation of their progress over the past two major tournaments and they will be aiming to go all the way in Qatar.

Despite losing his place in the Manchester United team under Erik ten Hag, Maguire has kept his place in the England XI and Pickford believes his team-mate has the character to rise above the criticism he gets on a regular basis.

Pickford was speaking to reporters ahead of England’s game against the USA when he said (via the Mirror): “Part of being a footballer is being criticised, as everyone gets criticised in football, but of course he needs to be respected a lot more.

“But Harry is mentally strong and takes it really well. I think it’s a bit unfair but his performances on the pitch show why he has so many caps for England and is captain of Man United.”

Although Maguire had to come off with a head injury in England’s opener against Iran, the centre-back contributed an assist with a header in the 6-2 win.

Pickford has confirmed that Maguire is ready to return to action against the United States, adding: “He was involved in training and is fine.”

“Harry had done unbelievable. There was a pass for the first goal, then the asset with the set-piece and he maybe could have got us a penalty.

“Myself and Harry have a great relationship. The majority of my caps have been with Harry playing in front of me and we work really well together. Our defensive record with Harry playing there is really good as well and he is in a very good moment.”
