Man United loanee named in Championship team of the week

Amad Diallo has experienced highs and lows at Manchester United but roughly two years since signing from Atalanta, he remains on the periphery at Old Trafford.

The Ivorian youngster spent the second half of the 2020/21 season with the senior side and impressed in his brief cameos, with that goal against AC Milan in the Europa League being the obvious highlight.

He struggled to find a way into the side on the other side of the summer break and was eventually loaned out to Rangers, where he found it difficult to have an impact.

This year, pre-season felt like a make-or-break moment for Amad. The 20-year-old joined Sunderland on a season-long loan and manager Tony Mowbray has been vocal in his support and criticism of the tricky winger.

Mowbray recently praised Amad for his form and now, the attacker has been named in the Championship team of the week following his man-of-the-match display against Birmingham, as seen below.

Amad assisted Sunderland’s opening goal in that before scoring the winner in the second half. The victory took Sunderland up to 15th in the Championship table.

Amad has now been directly involved in four goals in his last five appearances in the leagues, signalling that the tide may finally be turning.

SN’s verdict…
Amad’s talent is there for everyone to see but for whatever reason, it just hasn’t happened for him at United yet. He’s also quite unlucky in the sense that he joined when the club was in need of heavy investment in his position.

Since he joined in 2021, the club have signed both Antony and Jadon Sancho, which makes it difficult for Amad to break into the senior side going forward.

A good season with Sunderland could, however, earn him a loan move to the Premier League next season and that’s when everyone will get to see what he’s really about. It can’t be forgotten that he’s still only 20.
