Man United star held talks with Premier League clubs over summer exit

There are a number of Manchester United players with uncertain futures and several first-team regulars are set to enter the final six months of their contracts.

David de Gea and Marcus Rashford are permanent fixtures on Erik ten Hag’s teamsheet but recently, defender Luke Shaw has regained his place after initially losing out to new signing Tyrell Malacia.

Shaw is another player who is out of contract at the end of this season, although the club does have the option to extend that deal for an additional year.

His future at Old Trafford is, however, far from certain and now there has been a fresh update on the situation ahead of this winter’s World Cup, where Shaw is expected to feature for England.

According to journalist Jacque Talbot, Shaw held talks with both Leicester City and Everton over a summer exit and a third Premier League club is also mentioned.

As per the report, Everton manager Frank Lampard is still keen on signing Shaw after missing out this summer but the player is believed to want a new contract at Old Trafford.

Talbot adds that although official talks have not begun over fresh terms, Shaw wants a five-year deal, which would mean he will have been at the club for 14 years upon the expiry of that potential contract.

Furthermore, it’s added that United have a number of reservations about extending Shaw’s deal. The 27-year-old’s injury record is one of them and the emergence of Malacia could further limit Shaw’s chances in the future.

SN’s verdict…
As things stand, it’s clear to see that Shaw fits the Erik ten Hag model more than any other left-back contracted to United but consistency has been a problem ever since he signed for the club eight years ago.

One season aside, United have never been able to rely fully on Shaw and that’s why Ten Hag was so keen on signing Malacia from Feyenoord.

It remains to be seen how this unfolds but if he is rewarded with a new deal, it will be because Ten Hag trusts him and that shouldn’t be disputed.
