Man United behind Man City in race to sign £83m midfielder

Manchester United made heavy investments over the summer and broke their record for most money spent in a single transfer window, with Erik ten Hag signing six players.

Midfield was a real cause for concern going into this summer following the departures of several key figures in that area, including Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic.

Christian Eriksen and Casemiro were brought in and thus far and there’s little to suggest that United will regret any incomings or outgoings.

Jude Bellingham, the Borussia Dortmund midfielder, has been linked with a move to United for the best part of two years and the expectation is that he will finally leave the German club this summer.

Premier League clubs will be lining up for his signature and according to a new report, Dortmund are willing to part ways with Bellingham for just £83m – if the full fee is paid up front.

That’s according to The Sun, who deal United a blow in their potential pursuit of Bellingham. As per the report, Manchester City are leading the race to sign him and Pep Guardiola’s side are convinced they will land the signing of the 19-year-old.

Furthermore, it’s stated that United maintain an interest in Bellingham but know they must finish in the top four this season to have any hope of bringing him to Old Trafford.

SN’s verdict…
United made two big signings in midfield over the summer but it can’t be forgotten that both players, Eriksen and Casemiro, are solutions with a view to medium-to-long-term success.

United still need to sign a young midfielder and Bellingham perfectly fits the bill. The Reds were interested when he left Birmingham in 2020 but after missing out that time, they will now face competition from their rivals.
