Lisandro Martinez has already become one of the fan-favourites at Manchester United and he was serenaded to chants of ‘Argentina, Argentina!’ after Thursday’s 2-0 win over FC Sheriff.
The 24-year-old joined the club from Ajax earlier this year and after a patchy start to life in Manchester, he has already emerged as one of the first names on Erik ten Hag’s teamsheet.
Martinez is the only left-footed centre-back at the club and he was a player Ten Hag was determined to sign. The early signs are that Martinez’s arrival has helped fix one of three problems that faced Ten Hag when he took over.
Speaking after another sparkling display alongside Raphael Varane at the heart of United’s defence, Martinez explained why he was so desperate to follow Ten Hag from Amsterdam to Manchester.
“I chose Manchester United because it is the best club in the world,” Martinez told the National News. “That is it. It was that simple for me. It is the best club in the world.
“Every game you can feel the support of the people. I always dreamed of playing for this club. Everyone knows about Manchester United; it is not because of now that they are so big, it is because they have a lot of history you know.”
After a fiery start to life in Manchester, Martinez will now be targetting a place in Argentina’s starting line-up for this winter’s World Cup.
Martinez’s charisma and leadership are one of the biggest reasons United fans have taken to him so quickly. The man can do little wrong at the moment. On the pitch, he is a colossus.
He communicates well with his team-mates, something some of the other players in the past have struggled with. He sets the tone with his determination.
It’s still early days but as things stand, it looks like United may have struck gold with his signing. Alongside Varane, he looks unbeatable.
