Harry Maguire faces being dropped against Liverpool

Harry Maguire could get dropped against Liverpool tonight.

The north west clash sees the two biggest rivals in the Premier League search for their first wins of the season. Liverpool have two points on the table whereas United have none.

According to James Ducker of The Telegraph, Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez have been partnered together at centre-half in training in recent days. The reporter is still awaiting confirmation of who starts at centre-back but there appears to be some possibility that Maguire could be axed from the line-up.

Last week a report from the Daily Mail suggested Erik ten Hag was considering dropping Maguire for the visit of our arch-rivals.

The England international started the first two games of the season, which resulted in defeats against Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford, leaving the manager with no other option but to switch things around.

Maguire has played alongside new signing Lisandro Martinez in both of those games, but it could be Raphael Varane that starts alongside the Argentine against the Scousers.

Furthermore, talkSPORT’s Manchester correspondent, Micky Gray, says fans can expect big changes tonight: “I have spoken to a couple of people, and that could be one of the big changes [against Liverpool].

“I don’t think Harry Maguire is going to be in the starting XI, so it just depends if it is going to be new signing Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane. Manchester United have options.

“I don’t think it is down to the personnel [for Manchester United’s current form], I just think whatever XI Erik ten Hag picks, they have got to match Liverpool for effort.

“If they don’t, it could be another big score.”
