Joan Laporta suggests Barcelona are waiting on De Jong decision

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has spoken out about Frenkie de Jong’s future again.

Manchester United have been in talks with the La Liga giants for over nine weeks in attempt to sign the Netherlands midfielder as Erik ten Hag’s primary transfer target.

However, a deal has dragged on and we are still none the wiser about where De Jong will be playing his football next season.

There has been whispers that Chelsea are monitoring his situation too, which could come as unwelcome news to the United board.

But Barcelona chief Laporta claims Barcelona like De Jong and have received some offers already for his signature, but first they want to see what the player wants moving forward.

They still need to clarify some aspects of his situation.

Laporta told Caro De Las Salas, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano via Twitter: “Frenkie de Jong is our player, we really like him. We received some offers for Frenkie but we didn’t accept as of now, as we want to talk with him and know exactly what he wants.

“We need to clarify some aspects of his situation.”

In last night’s pre-season El Clasico, Xavi once again benched De Jong before playing the central midfielder out of position.

Other players were preferred in De Jong’s usual midfielder role, while the Netherlands international was played at centre-back for the second game in a row.

It sounds like De Jong is getting the Alex Telles treatment at Barcelona because I would be shocked if Xavi plans to play him there next season.
