Lisandro Martinez can play in three different positions.
Known as The Butcher, I honestly think Manchester United are getting a player in Lisandro Martinez that will be soon considered a favourite amongst fans.
That is not a prediction based on knowing the inner details of his game as a defensive-minded player, but his attitude and approach to defending.
Manchester United have already confirmed the imminent signing of the 24-year-old Argentina international.
What a lot of United fans may be surprised by is the fact Martinez can play in three different defensive positions. That makes this an even better signing because we are quickly learning already that Ten Hag likes versatile players and Martinez was voted Ajax Player of the Year in their recent Eredivisie-winning campaign.
In 2019, Ten Hag brought him to Ajax from Argentine side Defensa (H/t Transfermarkt) because he had a “brain for central midfield” (via Manchester Evening News) following Frenkie de Jong’s transfer to Barcelona.
Martinez didn’t enjoy it at the start but he was used to playing in left-back, centre-back and defensive midfield.
“At the beginning, I felt like going home and crying,” Martinez told La Nacion back in 2020. “The first few weeks were horrible. Different intensity. Different control. Different passes. Different reading of the game.”
The fact he won Player of the Year at Ajax for 2021/22 proves he adapted quickly.
It comes as a huge bonus to have a player like Martinez who can play in a number of different roles, though I reckon he will be one of our two centre-backs more often than not.
Let us know in the comments section if you think Martinez should be partnered alongside Raphael Varane or Harry Maguire?
