There are a number of positions Erik ten Hag would like to improve at Manchester United but judging by the club’s transfer activity so far, midfield and centre-back have been identified as the two areas in most need of strengthening.

Frenkie de Jong and Christian Eriksen are two players heavily linked with a transfer to Old Trafford, whilst United are locked in negotiations with Ajax over Lisandro Martinez to reinforce United’s backline.

AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori has been in tremendous form since joining the Italian club from Chelsea last year, helping them win their first Serie A title since 2011.

Tomori’s efforts in Italy have earned him plenty of plaudits in the United Kingdom and earlier this summer, he was back in Gareth Southgate’s England setup.

According to Calciomercato, Manchester United hold an interest in signing Tomori despite Milan’s plans to enter contract negotiations with the 24-year-old. As per the report, Milan want to extend his contract beyond his current deal, which expires in 2025.

United’s interest may end up being just that in the end, with the report claiming that Tomori is currently not interested in leaving Milan and has instructed his entourage to disregard any offers.

SN’s verdict…
Jadon Sancho’s famous move to Dortmund in 2017 has inspired many young English players to move abroad in recent years – a career move that has been traditionally uncharacteristic of English talents.

For Tomori, it has paid off as his stocks have risen and United’s supposed interest does not come as a surprise. United’s interest in a centre-back this summer is clear but it’s unlikely that Milan would be willing to discuss his departure.

He is a mainstay in Stefano Pioli’s side but in the future, he could be one to keep an eye on for United.
