Manchester United join race for Lisandro Martinez after Ajax turn down Arsenal’s £30m offer

A number of Ajax players have been linked with a move to Manchester United this summer.

One we genuinely thought could end up at Old Trafford is Jurrien Timber, but it now sounds like he will be staying in the Netherlands until after the World Cup later this year.

Another defender at Ajax who has featured in the gossip columns this summer is Lisandro Martinez – a left-sided centre-back, which is something Erik ten Hag is reportedly looking for in the transfer market.

However, Ajax have made it clear that they have no intension whatsoever to sell both Timber and Martinez this summer, as per Fabrizio Romano.

Martinez, 24, would be a versatile option to add to our defensive unit ahead of next season because he can play at centre-back, left-back and defensive midfield.

He joined Ajax from Defensa in 2019 and has since gone on to establish himself as one of the best young defenders in Europe.

According to The Athletic, Arsenal had a €30 million offer rejected by Ajax already, so they’ll want more money for the Argentine. Now, it sounds like United are ready to join the race to sign Martinez.

De Telegraaf claims that United are preparing a move for the player.

It shouldn’t be too much of a problem that he is under contract at Ajax until 2025, but that does mean Ajax are in no rush to sell their man.

One thing that favours Martinez’s cause a lot other than his familiarity with the Ten Hag is the kind of versatility that he offers to the team.
