Barcelona president Joan Laporta refuses to rule out Frenkie de Jong sale

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has issued a verdict on the possible sale of midfield ace Frenkie de Jong this summer. The speculation has led to lots of excitement among Manchester United fans and I am sure Erik ten Hag would really like to work with the former Ajax academy graduate again.

“We will do what is best for the club,” Laporta told Sport. “If the economic levers that we want to activate come off, no player will leave for economic reasons.

“I insist. Let the sports management work. There are players who are quoted to have received offers. In the sports area, Xavi and Mateu Alemany rule and he ends up deciding the club’s sports management.

“I will follow what the professionals of the club say.”

De Jong is being linked with a move away from Camp Nou this summer, with Manchester United one of the clubs considered frontrunners for his signature, despite fears that the player would prefer to join a team that has qualified for the Champions League.

It will take big money to sign De Jong, who joined Barcelona in 2019 in a deal costing €75 million, but he has struggled to perform in Xavi’s system this season.

Football Espana claims Barca fans are in two minds about talk of De Jong being sold this summer.

Only time will tell if United can land De Jong this summer, but he is a player who would arrive already knowing a lot about Ten Hag’s style of football. That could be a huge benefit to the new manager.
